Top 5 Acne Myths, Busted

When you’re experiencing a breakout, you may have received prevention tips from people all around you, but which of them works? We’re here to debunk 5 of the most commonly heard acne myths for you.

Myth #1: It’s okay to pop a pimple.

We know how irresistible it can be, but you should NEVER pop a pimple. Squeezing pushes bacteria and the pus deeper into your skin, causing more swelling and redness, or worse -- permanent scars. Proper skincare and patience is the key to making it disappear.

Myth #2: Greasy foods and chocolate cause acne.

A high-sugar or high-fat diet can increase sebum production and develop inflammatory responses in the body, which may lead to acne. But there is no evidence that greasy foods and chocolate are the culprits behind breakouts. Acne has more to do with genetics and hormones than it does with your diet. Experts recommend eating everything in moderation.

Myth #3: Wearing makeup causes acne breakouts.

Torn apart between wearing makeup to cover up your acne and not wearing makeup to avoid worsening your condition? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, wearing makeup is fine as long as you use cosmetics that won’t clog up your pores. If you have acne-prone skin, opt for cosmetics with the labels -- won’t clog pores, oil-free, non-comedogenic, and non-acnegenic.

Myth #4: Acne is for teenagers.

While acne occurs mostly during the adolescent days, it can happen on adults well into their thirties and beyond too. It could be persistent acne from during one’s adolescent days or late-onset acne on one who has never had teen acne at all. People of all ages get acne for various reasons.

Myth #5: Acne is contagious.

Yes, you can touch, hug, and kiss someone with acne without having it passed on to you. Touching a pimple and then touching yourself on your skin won’t increase your chances of getting a pimple after, but it can make the touched pimple worse due to the bacteria on your fingers.
